Spesies Baru Pohon Hiasan Natal Ditemukan

KOMPAS.com — Buat Anda yang merayakan Natal mungkin akrab dengan tanaman mistletoe, salah satu tanaman yang daunnya banyak dipakai untuk menghias rumah saat Natal. Di negara barat sana, daun pohon itu dimanfaatkan sebagai hiasan dengan merangkainya dan menggantungkannya di depan pintu. Lalu, ada tradisi bahwa siapa saja yang berdiri di dekatnya harus mencium orang yang dikasihinya.

Mistletoe merupakan tanaman parasit yang masuk dalam ordo Santalales. Selama ini ada beberapa jenis tanaman mistletoe yang banyak digunakan. Nah, menjelang Natal kali ini ternyata ada spesies baru mistletoe yang baru saja ditemukan. Spesies baru tersebut ditemukan di wilayah dekat Gunung Mabu, sebelah utara Mozambik, oleh para ilmuwan dari Royal Botanical Garden, Kew, London. Penemuan ini termasuk unik sebab para ilmuwan mengonfirmasi bahwa spesies yang ditemukannya ini baru tepat sebelum Natal.

Nama spesies mistletoe yang ditemukan adalah Helixanthera schizocalyx. Spesies ini dijumpai pertama kali oleh Colin Congdon, seorang ahli kupu-kupu, yang menyadari bahwa spesies tumbuhan ini berbeda dengan yang biasa ditemukan di Malawi dan Tanzania. Hanya lima sampel tumbuhan yang dikoleksi dan kelimanya ditemukan tumbuh di pohon kopi.

Mistletoe biasa tumbuh sebagai parasit dengan menempel di batang pohon elm, pinus, apel, dan ek. Sebagian besar tanaman ini termasuk golongan hemi-parasitic, yang artinya mengambil sebagian nutrisi yang dibutuhkan dari tanaman lain. Sementara itu, terdapat pula mistletoe yang termasuk parasit total, yakni jenis yang termasuk dalam genus Arceuthobium.

Spesies mistletoe memiliki buah berwarna putih dengan biji di dalamnya. Buah ini akan dimakan oleh burung. Efek sampingnya, biji di dalam burung itu akan menyebar ke tempat lain. Ketika biji jatuh di permukaan pohon, mereka akan bertunas dan membentuk perakaran untuk menghisap nutrisi dari pohon inangnya.

Penemuan mistletoe merupakan penemuan terbaik Royal Botanical Garden tahun ini. Penemuan Royal Botanical Garden lainnya adalah spesies anggrek Vietnam, spesies palem-paleman baru dari Madagaskar, iris liar dari Andes, tanaman kanopi raksasa dari Kamerun yang tingginya mencapai 41 meter, dan tanaman yang disebut osigawa di Kenya.
